Port-Au-Prince, Haiti (CNN)

The hurricane’s punishing rain and wind were already being felt as the storm churned offshore.

As of 2 p.m. ET, the storm’s center was about 75 miles (120 kilometers) southeast of Guantanamo, Cuba, and about 140 miles (230 kilometers) northwest of Port-au-Prince, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida.

In the westernmost tip of Haiti, which juts into the Caribbean Sea and is closest to the hurricane, there were reports from the town of Jeremie of destroyed houses, downed trees and flooded rivers, said Marie-Eve Bertrand, communications manager for CARE in the nation.

Also, she said, CARE workers near the coastal city of Leogane reported the area has been inundated with nearly 5 feet of water. Flooding from a nearby river had entered some tent encampments and temporary shelters, Bertrand said

Tomas also was being felt in Port-au-Prince, the nation’s capital.

“It’s been raining heavily all night,” said Leonard Doyle, the spokesman for the International Organization for Migration.

“The rain is a huge problem where we are,” Doyle told CNN on Friday morning. “There’s every danger that you could have flash flooding. Every danger.”

Relief worker Roseann Dennery of Samaritan’s Purse was near Cabaret, about 20 miles north of Port-au-Prince, on Friday morning, touring camps that hold some of the 1 million people left homeless by January’s 7.0-magnitude earthquake, which killed 250,000 people.

“It’s almost eerie,” she said. “It’s rainy, it’s dark and there’s really not a lot of movement.”

The few people moving from tent to tent were wrapped in sheets and cloth to provide some protection against the constant rain, she said. The ground is soaked and some low-lying areas have minor flooding.

Some people were riding the storm out in open-air community centers with supposedly sturdy roofs, she said. But many were just huddling in their tents, waiting for the wind and rain to pass. Most don’t have anywhere else to go.

“A lot of them do not have families or relatives,” she said.

She said her agency, an international Christian relief organization, has evacuated 30 staff members from Leogane out of fear of mud slides there.

Michael Dockrey, the director in Haiti for the International Medical Corps, also expressed his deep concern Friday.

“Particularly,” he told CNN, “with mud slides that can cut off whole communities. We have prepositioned medical supplies, tents, tarps and staff in areas that we know will be isolated.”

Aid workers already were struggling to keep up with the cholera outbreak, which has killed nearly 450 people and hospitalized about 7,000. The bacterial disease causes diarrhea and vomiting that can lead to deadly dehydration within hours.

“It’s obviously stretched us all real thin,” Dockrey said. “We could certainly use more help … as can all the other responders.”

The hurricane will only make matters worse.

“Even if Tomas only brushes Haiti, it may exacerbate the epidemic, facilitating the spread of the disease into and throughout metropolitan Port-au-Prince, where a third of the population remains homeless and in camps,” the International Organization for Migration said.

Some Haitians scurried Friday morning through the rain-pelted streets of Port-au-Prince, looking for somewhere to seek shelter, reported CNN en Espanol’s Diulka Perez. They have been told to go to churches or the homes of friends and family, but there are significantly fewer churches or homes still standing after January’s massive earthquake.

There is also no public transportation available to take people anywhere, Perez reported.

The problem is compounded, she said, because there’s no central source of information. Haitians are having to rely on word of mouth to obtain information.

Nor are Haitians eager to leave their tent shelters, because the government cannot guarantee they will have someplace to return to after the storm passes.

Tomas became a Category 1 hurricane as it approached Haiti early Friday, forecasters said.

The eye of the storm passed near western Haiti Friday morning and was expected to move near or over eastern Cuba later in the day. It is forecast to be near or over the southeastern Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos islands Friday night or early Saturday.

The biggest threats were mud slides and flash flooding, said CNN meteorologist Reynolds Wolf. Port-au-Prince is bounded on three sides by hills, and rain runoff could cause flooding, Wolf said. The low-lying port city also borders the Caribbean Sea.

Tomas was moving north-northeast at 12 mph (19 kph), the hurricane center said. Winds from the storm remained at 85 mph (140 kph), the Hurricane Center said.

Rain associated with the storm started falling on Haiti on Thursday afternoon as aid agencies scrambled to move as many people as possible into storm shelters.

Deb Ingersoll of the American Refugee Committee said her organization was helping disseminate information and encourage people to leave, but added, “To be honest, I’m not sure many of them will.”

“They’re very entrenched here,” she said, and many worry about losing their possessions.

“They’re looking at us like we’re crazy for telling them they should leave,” Ingersoll said. “They don’t seem to think this is an event. … Aid workers are far more worried than they are.”

Ingersoll said group members were dismantling tents in the center of camp to prevent them from becoming projectiles in the wind and encouraging residents to find family or friends who still have homes in which they can stay.

Tomas was forecast to dump 5 to 10 inches of rain on Haiti, with isolated maximum amounts of 15 inches in some areas. In addition, a storm surge in the warning area could raise water levels by as much as 8 feet above normal tide levels in areas of onshore winds, accompanied by “large and destructive waves,” the hurricane center said.

Many structures that would usually be used for storm shelters — schools and hospitals — are no longer standing. And many of Haiti’s homeless have no options.

As it did after the earthquake, the United States offered its assistance.

The U.S Agency for International Development had already prepositioned supplies, but rushed more into the country before the airport closed ahead of the storm, said Mark Ward, acting director of the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance.

“We had enough in the country for 100,000 people,” he said. “When it became clear within the last week that we were going to get a severe storm, we got a lot more in. We added enough to help another 25,000 people.”

Citing Haitian authorities, Ward said at a Friday briefing for reporters that about half the residents at temporary camps left those facilities overnight to stay with family or friends. He said the Haitian government has confirmed one fatality.

In addition, the U.S. Navy redirected the USS Iwo Jima to Haiti from Suriname, where the ship’s crew was conducting a four-month humanitarian mission.

Navy Capt. Thomas Negus, the commander of Continuing Promise, said the Iwo Jima was east of Haiti on Friday afternoon. Commanders were waiting for weather conditions to clear enough to allow the ship’s eight helicopters to begin flying over Haiti, looking for people and communities in need of immediate aid and scouting for damage that could slow the distribution of pre-positioned relief supplies.

“We will be poised to provide immediate life-saving should that be necessary,” Negus told journalists during a telephone call from the Iwo Jima.

In addition to search-and-rescue-trained helicopter crews, the ship is carrying more than 200 medical personnel and 60 Navy construction engineers who can help with recovery efforts. The ship is also carrying a 500-member Marine task force and personnel from nongovernmental relief agencies.

Negus, who participated in the Navy response to the earthquake, said he did not expect the damage from Tomas to be anywhere near as severe.

“It’s everyone’s prayer here that our capabilities will not be required,” Negus said. “But everyone should be very confident that we are prepared if they are.”

Tomas was previously a Category 2 hurricane and then weakened to a tropical depression before re-intensifying. Forecasters predict it will weaken again Saturday.

– Already devastated this year by a killer earthquake and a deadly cholera outbreak, Haiti began to feel the brute force Friday of Hurricane Tomas, which could dump up to 15 inches of rain and trigger flash floods and mudslides.

Washington (CNN) — Outgoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Friday she will run for minority leader in the new Congress, even as some moderate and conservative Democrats insisted she should step aside.
“Many of our colleagues have called with their recommendations on how to continue our fight for the middle class, and have encouraged me to run for House Democratic Leader,” she said in a written statement. “Based on those discussions, and driven by the urgency of protecting health care reform, Wall Street reform, and Social Security and Medicare, I have decided to run.”
Pelosi initially announced her intentions via Twitter.
In the wake of Tuesday’s Republican takeover of the House, Democrats will move into the minority positions in the new Congress, which convenes in January.
Shortly after Pelosi’s announcement, House Majority Whip James Clyburn announced that he would be running for minority whip. Pelosi’s No. 2 man, Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer — who is widely considered to be more moderate — will “spend the next few days talking to [House] members and getting their thoughts on him being minority whip,” according to his spokeswoman, Katie Grant.
A senior Democratic source told CNN that Hoyer is “in a nice way saying he is going to run against Clyburn.”
Moderate Democratic Rep. Dan Boren of Oklahoma was the latest to urge Pelosi to step aside and not run for House minority leader. He said he would support a more centrist candidate.
“I cannot in good conscience support Nancy Pelosi as our leader,” Boren told CNN. “I think that it is important for the Democratic Party to move in a new direction for the sake of our country. Democrats and Republicans need leaders who are going to work together.”
Boren’s public pressure for Pelosi to go follows similar comments from Democratic Reps. Heath Schuler of North Carolina and Jim Matheson of Utah, who also have said they would prefer a new, more moderate Democratic leader.
“I think based on the outcome of this election, we should all acknowledge what the American people said — and they are looking for change. And I think when you, as a political party, suffer losses of historic proportions, it makes sense to change things up,” Matheson told CNN. “Therefore, I don’t think she should be running for leader.”
Rep. Jason Altmire, a moderate Democrat from a conservative district in western Pennsylvania, agreed. “I am not voting for Nancy Pelosi,” he said.
“I don’t get the sense that Speaker Pelosi understands what happened on Tuesday. We lost middle America. The Democratic party got crushed,” Altmire told CNN.
He noted that many of his fellow Democrats in districts near his lost their seats.
Despite his opposition, Altmire, who voted against major pieces of Democratic legislation, including the health care bill, said Pelosi will easily be victorious in her quest to be minority leader.
But Democratic Rep. Jesse L. Jackson Jr. of Illinois said he would support Pelosi’s bid. “We’re in a political storm, but we don’t need to adopt an ‘any leader in a storm’ mentality,” Jackson said in a statement issued Friday. After Tuesday’s losses, moderate Democrats are now a very small part of the Democratic caucus. The bigger question, according to multiple Democratic sources, is what Pelosi’s fellow progressives want her to do. Americans United for Change, a progressive political organization, sent an e-mail notice to its members Friday morning asking them to send personal notes to Pelosi urging her to stay.
“Make sure she knows that we will support her,” said the e-mail.
“If she runs, she will win,” said one senior Democratic source.
A progressive Democrat told CNN he had talked to many of his colleagues about the situation in the past few days.
“It’s fair to say that for most progressives, their visceral place was that Nancy deserves to be the leader if she wants to be, but no one would have burst into tears if she decided not to,” said the congressman, who did not want to go on the record in order to protect private conversations.
The Pelosi supporter said she should not be blamed for the losses. Rather the setback was the result of a bad economy and, the supporter said, an ineffective job by the White House in selling Democratic achievements.
While Pelosi’s tireless fundraising has built a reservoir of support among Democratic lawmakers, several sources within the party said there are a number of progressive Democrats also who do not want her to run. Meanwhile, Rep. John Yarmuth, a Kentucky Democrat who had been a staunch supporter of Pelosi, told a local television station that he wants Pelosi to step down as Democratic leader.
“I know that there is some thought that Nancy Pelosi may stay around,” Yarmuth said Thursday. “As good a leader as she has been, I don’t think she’s the right leader to take us forward.”
Shuler is considering challenging Pelosi if she runs, according to a number of Democratic sources. Because of the makeup of the Democratic caucus, few think he would win.
Several Democratic sources say they worry about this dragging out, especially given how public the Democrats’ dispute over Pelosi’s future is becoming.
On Thursday, Pelosi told the Huffington Post that she is getting a positive response from Democratic lawmakers because she has “kept the caucus together” and increased Democratic numbers in 2006 and 2008.
Matheson told CNN one of the political concerns is that it will be harder to recruit candidates to run in 2012 with Pelosi as the Democratic leader — especially those who just lost and may want to try to get their old seats back.

Parents become involved with their children’s school education through homework. Parental involvement in homework can help speed up a child’s learning process. It enhances appreciation of education in both the parents and children alike. It gives children an opportunity to express a positive attitude toward school and education and have success in learning. Helping with homework can be a very powerful tool for parents, because it enables them to know what the child is learning and how their performance is. It also gives parents an opportunity to talk with their children and know about all the activities that have been going on at school.
There could be a possibility that a parent’s involvement may interfere with learning. For example, parents can confuse children if the teaching methods are a bit different from what they are used to at school. Parents’ involvement in homework will cause the child to decline in the classroom if, for instance, the parents complete the task the child is able to do on their own. However, that is considered a possibility. When mothers and fathers get involved in helping their children with homework, communication will improve between them. It can help parents to understand what to expect in performance and grades.
Overall, parents should be more involved with their children’s education and see where they are having difficulties. If the child is doing well in school, then the parents should provide support for their child’s own choices of doing homework. Parents should avoid any interference if children can complete their homework on time and independently. This gives parents the task to recheck the work and know about their children’s learning abilities.
Having homework policies will give teachers and parents the insight on a child’s particular needs and circumstances. Parents should make every effort to help their children with their homework. Learning is an ongoing process and young minds soak up everything that they can acquire. Parents provide a more vibrant approach to studying. For example, children may feel a bit more comfortable asking questions about their studies to their parents. Children may be a bit hesitant to ask teachers while in class perhaps.
Helping your children with homework has its benefits. You will be able to know the quality and quantity of education that is being provided at school. Getting involved with homework will help your child’s confidence level. The best thing to do is have your child complete their homework without any distractions. Do not turn on the television or the radio while your children are studying at home. Better to offer your help, rather lounging around and distracting your children.

If you are stressed out because of long working hours and countless orders from your boss, and as a result you are suffering from sleepless nights and are missing quality time with your family, then it’s time you plan a weekend. Now comes the time to decide who do you want to relax with over the weekend? You can book a weekend away with your partner, your family or your friends.
A weekend vacation, as the name clearly states, refers to a short vacation. So, you should utilize this limited time in such a way that you do not waste a second and enjoy to the max. With air travel so affordable, and airports easy to get to, you can be at your destination in just a few hours. Why not fly after work on Friday, spend your whole Saturday there, then return late on Sunday evening?
However if you are looking for a more adventurous ride, you can choose a road trip. Traveling by car is one of the best ways to get to your holiday destination. You can make this trip more exciting by renting your favorite convertible or a BMW.
Just remember to pack the right amount of luggage, bring plenty of activities, such as movies or games for the younger crowd, and keep a GPS or a traditional map handy. One good thing about road trips is that one can stop at a select shop for knick-knacks, or park at a good restaurant for a hearty meal.
To make the weekend even more exciting, you can plan a cruise. A cruise is a good way to recharge and loosen all the tension you acquired at the office. Getting on cruise is always fun! You can enjoy all the facilities like lavish international cuisine and other luxuries. Crabbing and dancing can be fun activities if you are onboard with friends.
If you are a shopaholic but haven’t gotten the chance to drop by your favorite mall due to your work load, you can spend the whole weekend window shopping and buying yourself things which you need. The smell of new leather shoes and the soft touch of a cashmere coat can release you from stress, thus making your weekends enjoyable.
Whether it is summer or spring, if you are a beach person you can get into your swimsuit and spend your weekends lying on shores. Do not forget sun tan lotions when planning for beach in sunny summers. If you have a young one in your company, toy spades, buckles and other such tools can be helpful for sandcastles.
Weekends can be made much more fun even if you do not want to go anywhere at all. To take your mind off your work you can recall old times and hobbies like gardening, cycling, skating, swimming, baking or maybe even sketching. Another good way to relax can be hanging out with your friends in your favorite coffee shop, going to a Knicks game or walking to a spa with your girl-gang!

When was the last time your family sat down and enjoyed a meal together? Close your eyes and picture a perfect family meal. What you will see is mother wearing pearls, father wearing a sweater and serving food, children discussing how their day went, and April, your pet cat licking her milk. Everyone in this picture is wearing a smile on their faces.
Now imagine a modern family meal. Mother is replaced with a servant wearing an apron, father, in a tie and suit, is busy on the phone and the children are either not on the table, or are playing with their food quietly! This isnt exactly the warm scene you had just imagined earlier.
The importance of family dinnertime is something that often gets overlooked in our modern, fast-paced environment. No one is ever home at the same time and everyone is caught up with their own schedules. Mothers don’t have time to cook, whereas fathers often have way too many things to do outside the home to come in at mealtime. As a result, children give the least importance to mealtimes and engage themselves somewhere or the other.
It’s one of the great tragedies of modern life that all the technology which is supposed to make life easier has in fact led to us being busier than ever. With technological devices like TV, iPods and personal computers, it is easier for family members to tune out from their home environment rather than be involved in it.
If we pay attention, mealtimes are actually an important part of building family ties. For many children, the time when they gather around their dining table is the most precious of all times. If today’s generation does not get a chance to experience such a magical moment, that can be unfair.
Have you ever noticed that eating together makes it a lot easier to talk? It is a fact that eating together with people brings them closer. That is why it is so important to share these meals with the family so that everyone can share their day. Parents will learn more about your kids, and the latter will learn more about their elders. Everyone gets to have a say in all home decisions, and the family will start bonding even better.
There are so many things to look at around the dinner table. One can learn a lot of things from table manners, meal etiquette, and social skills. You learn to appreciate food and learn to be thankful, thus the one who has cooked feels honored. Family meals are healthier and balanced, so your family has more chances of feeling healthy.
Family mealtimes have many social, emotional, health, and educational benefits. It’s a chance to share information and news of the day. Plus, one can give extra attention to children and teens during that one hour at the table. This makes them feel secure and help parents monitor the company their kids are keeping and their activities. Family meals foster warmth, security and love, as well as feelings of belonging. It can be a unifying experience for all, thus giving everyone the best memories for a lifetime.

In the past fifty years, we have seen recessions of all hues. But this time, it is going to stay much longer. The financial crisis has etched its mark from the first world countries to the third world countries.
The global financial crisis really started to show its effects in the middle of 2007 and into 2008. Around the world stock markets have fallen, large financial institutions have collapsed or been bought out, and governments in even the wealthiest nations have had to come up with rescue packages to bail out their financial systems.
No one knows when this recession might end or how bad it will get. If you have to pull your money out to save yourself, you might end up doing so at a low market and actually lose on your investment. However, houses have always been a smart real estate investment. Home values typically bounce back quickly and generally leave the owner with some profit even during a soft market.
Houses have always been a smart real estate investment. But they can sometimes take a longer period of time to give you the expected returns. In today’s volatile market, house prices and values have dropped around ten percent nationally, with some areas reporting decreases as high as seventeen percent. Despite This bleak market situation, investing in houses is favorable for buyers.
At this point in the economy and housing market, the interest rates and mortgages rates are lower than they had been in the past four decades. Owning real estate now is an extremely good option. Coupled with decreased market prices, most of the investors are clinging to avail the opportunity to purchase distressed properties. Generally distressed properties come with a fair share of headaches and challenges, but it can be a great deal sometimes. One must know how to deal with buyers, sellers, realtors, contractors and even tenants.
However, here is a piece of advice: unless you plan on making this a long term investment, investing in houses may be a terrible move. The main objective in purchasing investment houses is to buy them at significantly low prices or prices below market value and selling them at a profit in the long run. This can be a risky business, but if you are willing to do the work and realize that you’re not going to get rich overnight, you can make a handsome income from investing in real estate.

There is a big difference between healthy eating and dieting. Dieting is the practice of cutting down food in a regulated fashion to achieve or maintain a controlled weight, whereas healthy eating is the practice of consuming balanced food or having the correct proportions from each food group.
The first question that comes to mind is what are the different food groups? Food is divided into different food groups like a menu card you see at a restaurant. Those groupings are:
· Carbohydrates – These nutrients provide you with energy.
· Proteins – They provide you with materials needed for growth and repair.
· Fats – They provide you energy, but excess of these nutrients can lead to weight problems.
· Vitamins – They help you stay healthy.
· Water and Fibre – These help in digestion.
· Mineral salts – They are required for healthy teeth, bones and muscles.
Taking the correct proportion from each food group is what we call a balanced diet.
Eating healthy can transform one’s life. The process has countless advantages, and if combined with a healthy lifestyle, it will prevent eighty percent of illnesses. How healthy eating reflects in ones’ lives is illustrated as follows.
Healthy Circulatory System
The heart and the circulatory system send blood through the body, thus delivering oxygen and nutrients to the cells and different parts of the body, and eliminating wastes. If a person doesn’t take in healthy diet foods, his/her blood will clot and waste will stick to the lining of the artery. As a result, the arteries become covered with cholesterol and plaque. Eventually, this will cause the artery to narrow and lead to angina, shortness of breath and heart attack.
In a worst case scenario, the plaque can break off from the artery wall and move through the blood stream. This is a common cause of a heart stroke.
Healthy Digestive System
Once again, eating a healthy diet is paramount in maintaining a healthy digestive system and a healthy you! However, if you are not chewing our food well, do not have enough digestive enzymes to help digest and assimilate food, or are constipated, then no matter how healthy you eat, you will not benefit from your healthy diet. It is important to eat foods that are rich in digestive enzymes.
Healthy Skin and Hair
To reflect the glow of your skin and hair, you must increase your intake of vitamins from raw vegetables, fruits and water. Try to stay away from beef and pork, and eat chicken and turkey. Fresh fish is also very good, but avoid frozen fish or shellfish.
So, you see, eating is positively correlated to health. Thus, you should counteract your decadent lifestyle and load your body with foods that will help your body.

Making healthy choices on the daily basis and finding time to exercise is easier to say than to practice. Which category do you belong to?

Are you a Workaholic?

Do you want to look like a 40 year old when you are actually still in your 30s? It may seem as an overstatement, but the workplace itself does not give birth to the workaholics in us, but rather it can develop us into becoming so. How long has it been since you got up in the morning then went to work and stayed there till you were extremely bushed?

All you are left with after returning from work are body aches and pains and negative moods. So take a break! Get up 45 minutes before your usual time and hit the gym on your way back. It will help you relax so you can head back home feeling positive and ready to work the next day.

Are you a Foodie?

Sometimes it actually gets difficult to resist yummy food, especially when you see fast food restaurants on every corner. However, eating junk on a daily basis is very unfair to your health. You may start gaining dozens of kilograms and eventually become overweight. Your cholesterol and sugar levels increase, and, as a result, you may have to face nagging and lifelong diseases, and end up with infinite medicines! You can get rid of these medicines by exercising and joining a proper gym along with having a balanced diet.

Are you facing any stress disorder?

If you experience stress on the regular basis, it can have long-lasting effects on your health. To stay healthy, you should try to keep your stress levels under control. There are situations where being worried is valid, but overdoing anything is unreasonable, which can cost you a heart attack! So, the next time you feel stressed out, head to a gym. Try to become a member of a gym that provides other features like a relaxing massage, a steam bath, a pedicure and a soothing environment.

Are you a busy mother?

Chasing your toddler and handling house chores need a lot of effort, but you can’t just neglect your health. What will happen if you get sick? Who will then take care of your child? Prioritize things. Drop your baby at the nearest day care centre or hire a babysitter. Surely your kid can survive 60 minutes without you. Join a gym and try to become the woman your husband got married to.

Staying healthy just doesn’t just happen! It’s no miracle either! The more you take care of yourself, the healthier you remain! If you want to stay healthy and happy, work hard to make healthy food choices and try to fit exercise into your busy schedule at least thrice a week. Living a healthy life won’t be a guarantee against lung cancer or pancreas cancer; however, you will be adding to years and reducing your ailments with every workout you try.

There are both benefits and challenges is raising an only child. Even though you are very involved in your child’s life, finding the right balance for him or her can be tough. An only child has a very vibrant and unique personality of their own. As a parent, you will need to work with every characteristic of your child. That will significantly help your child develop into a successful and responsible adult. You have to be involved with your child in every part of life and never let them get a sense of negligence. Since they are alone without any siblings for interaction, the child might feel a bit left out.

To better help your only child as a parent, you need to observe all the characteristics. There are some effective parenting tips that you can use to better understand the challenges you face in raising your child. An only child has a variety of interesting characteristics. In most cases the child will display a mixture of characteristics in his or her daily routine. You may observe that your child has some organizational skill, and tends to be perfectionists at times. You may also see a difference in personality when your only child is a bit carefree, funny and creative. Plus there could be a hint of self centeredness much like a younger child.

All these are challenges when you have to raise your only child. You will have to work your way around their habits and make them feel secure. Here are a few tips to help you through your parenting. Be careful not to put too much pressure on your child’s mind, as they may develop some rebellious characteristics.

Help Your Child Build Friendships with Other Children

Building friendships and interaction is very crucial for raising an only child. Since your child does not have any siblings, you need to draw them out socially. There are great way to help your child socialize, consider enrolling them in preschool. Schedule play dates perhaps, this will be a great way to help your child interact with children of their own age.

Set Boundaries for Your Child

Boundaries are important because they make your child feel secure, and do let your child know that life as an adult will also have boundaries. An only child can be very bossy at times and dictate your actions. You have to set good boundaries, for example explain the fact that it is not good to behave a particular way, or their actions are not going to be tolerated.

Teach Your Child to Be Responsible

It is very easy for parents to pamper their only child. But you do need to teach your child how to be responsible. Do not clean their room or avoid giving them chores around the house. Perhaps give them age appropriate tasks they can do. This will teach the child to be responsible and this skill will be crucial to develop as they grow up.

It has been long debated on weather or not simple puzzle solving for seniors improves memory. Well I say “who cares”. I have an aunt who enjoys and does puzzles every day. She is 99 soon o be 100, and she has all her marbles. Now I am not positive that it the puzzles that keep her mind going but I do know she likes it and to be honest there is not much else she can do. She can get around still but very limited, she enjoys the company of her nieces and nephews and of coarse her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is also a great fan of baseball, she likes all baseball. She roots for both the Mets and Yankees but she will watch any game regardless of who’s playing. Se actually watches other teams so she can see the other teams and learn their players. This I think keeps her sharp as well. Now you would think with all the baseball she watches that she would talk a lot of baseball, but to tell you the truth. She talks about the puzzles she does and enjoys the accomplishment when she finishes. She brags about the Su Du Ku in the Sundays Post when she completes it. Like to let us know how long it takes as well. She loves the Su Du Ku’s does them every day. She also likes the search puzzles where you circle the words and the fill-in puzzles where you fill in the words from lists. She was very fond of the Logic puzzles where you figure out things from a few sentences but she hasn’t been doing them in a while. I think Su Du Ku took over as the mind game of choice for her.
Whether or not puzzles for seniors help improve memory or not I think its a great tool for seniors to just keep busy. When they don’t have work anymore to keep them occupied they need something to gravitate towards. Not every senior has been blessed with children or grandchildren so their needs to be something that keeps them busy. Just try and imagine right now you have no chores to do you are tired of the television its cold out so you need to stay in. What would you do? I have no idea. My wife companies now at me because I some times will start a project and not complete it. I have lots of things to do around the house and I find myself drifting towards doing puzzles myself. Maybe there is a sense of boredom at times and I need to feel the challenge of a puzzle. Can that be what it is for seniors? They start to get bored with their inability to do things that a good challenging puzzle can give them a sense of self worth.
